About Hamilton Island
Hamilton Island is in the heart if the Great Barrier Reef. October to December is the most popular time of year to visit with weather that is typically hot and sunny. These pre-Christmas months are very warm and less tropical than the post-Christmas months. Although, as soon as the warmer weather hits in Queensland, the chances of showers during the day can increase. However, these showers are usually short and quick, making way for clear, sunny skies. The average temperature is 28C.
The Island has so many attractions, experiences and activities. There is something for all budgets including, beaches, water sports, walking tracks, golf, snorkelling, sailing, scenic flights, spa. Getting there
The Island has its own airport that offers direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns, operated by Virgin Australia, Qantas and East Air. If you are staying at Reef View Hotel, Palm Bungalows, The Sundays, Beach Club or qualia there is a complimentary airport shuttle.
There are ferries that cruise to Hamilton Island throughout the day from Port of Airlie and Shute Harbour on the mainland. Long term parking is available at the Port of Airlie terminals, as well as other parking within the precinct. Travelling to Hamilton Island from Brisbane, Townsville or Cairns, coaches run to Airlie Beach, and arrive at the Port of Airlie transport terminal, right at the Port of Airlie ferry departure point.
The Spirit of Queensland runs five times a week return from Brisbane to Cairns, to Proserpine, with coach connections to the Port of Airlie and the Hamilton Island ferry. For more information please visit www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au or call 1800 872 467.
Getting around
Hamilton Island is uniquely car-free but still easy to navigate by golf buggy (for hire), the free shuttle bus or by foot.
Hospital and Medical Centre
There is no hospital on the Island, the closest hospitals are the Proserpine and Mackay Base Hospitals. The Island does have a Medical and Health Centre which is run by Atticus Health.
Traditional Owners
The Whitsundays form the traditional lands of the Ngaro people, who archaeologists report settled in the region approximately 8,000 years ago. The many islands and the surrounding waters, provided a bounty of food and ideal opportunities for shelter, making it a hospitable place to live and settle.
Hamilton Island Wildlife
Hamilton Island is home to a variety of wildlife, including wallabies, possums, goannas, fruit bats, sea eagles, parrots, kookaburras, cockatoos, sea turtles, whales, sharks, jellyfish, snakes and much more. Hamilton Island has a detailed “protected wildlife management strategy” that has been developed in close consultation with the Queensland Department of Environment and heritage protection (EHP).
